On May 11, 1933, Louis Farrakhan Muhammad, Sr. was born to Louis Eugene Wolcott in Chicago, Illinois, and was formerly known as Louis X. He is the spiritual head of the religious organisation Nation of Islam (NOI). He served as the minister of prominent mosques in Boston and Harlem, and he was chosen as the National Representative of the Nation of Islam by the late NOI leader Elijah Muhammad, who had served as the organization’s head for decades. As a result of Warith Deen Muhammad disbanding the NOI and founding the orthodox Islamic organisation American Society of Muslims, Farrakhan began the process of re-establishing the NOI.
Having reclaimed many of the Nation of Islam’s national properties, including the NOI National Headquarters Mosque Maryam, and reopening over 130 NOI mosques throughout the United States and the rest of the world, he renamed his organisation the Nation of Islam in 1981, after it had previously been known as Final Call. Farrakhan, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, is anti-Semitic and anti-White, among other things.
