Here is a look at McCaffrey's incredible – and illustrious – family tree.

Christian McCaffrey

The Colorado native was not only an elite high school football star but he was also a top-class sprinter, running the 100m in an incredible 10.75 seconds as a sophomore.

After joining Stanford in 2014, he had a breakout season the following year surpassing Barry Sanders' NCAA single-season record for all-purpose yards.

McCaffrey finished second to Alabama's Derrick Henry in the 2015 Heisman Trophy voting, leading him to be picked eighth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers.

The dual-threat playmaker became the only player with 2,500 rushing and receiving yards in his first three seasons in league history.

His success led to a four-year $64 million contract extension with the Panthers in 2020, which made him the highest-paid running back ever in the NFL.

After limited team success with the Panthers, McCaffrey was traded to the 49ers in October 2022, helping the team to the NFC Championship game that season.

Now a cornerstone of the 49ers offence, McCaffrey is on a tear having scored a touchdown in 17 consecutive games, tying the league's all-time record.

McCaffrey leads the NFL with 652 yards rushing and is also a big threat as a receiver with 292 yards.

Ed McCaffrey

McCaffrey's dad Ed was a star football player at Central Catholic High School in Allentown, Pennsylvania, also excelling in basketball where he won two state titles.

The wide receiver went on to play football at Stanford, where he earned first-team All-American honors as a senior and ranked fifth all-time in receptions (146) and third in receiving yards (2,333).

After being drafted into the NFL in 1991 by the New York Giants, McCaffrey went on to win one Super Bowl with the 49ers and two more with the Denver Broncos, including back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998.

McCaffrey surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in three seasons with the Broncos to reach the Pro Bowl in 1998.

Injuries, including a compound leg fracture, led to his retirement in 2004.

McCaffrey went into broadcasting before becoming the head coach at Valor Christian High School and the University of Northern Colorado before leaving the program in 2022.

Lisa McCaffrey

Ed met his wife-to-be Lisa at Stanford, where she was a star women's soccer player in the late 1980s.

“She had pace and fast feet – and she was strong" said Julie Foudy, the former captain of the USWNT and a former Stanford teammate.

"You often get one thing and not the other.

“And Lisa just flew. I mean, she was really fast.”

Lisa tried out for Women’s Professional Football League Colorado Valkyries in 2000 as part of a TV story.

She finished the 40-meter dash with one of the fastest times that day – 4.8 seconds – but felt nauseous afterwards.

"I had to get food as soon as I finished,” she told The Athletic

"And I remember thinking, something may be going on here because I’m never nauseous like this.

"And then I realized: Yup, I was knocked up for the fourth time.”

Dave Sime

Lisa's father Dave Sime is considered the greatest athlete in the family by a distance.

Sime passed up an incredible 23 football scholarship offers and was said to have turned down a $65,000 offer from the New York Giants baseball team.

Instead, he became a track and field star at Duke – where he also played baseball and football – and was the fastest sprinter in the world in the 1950s, setting multiple indoor and outdoor records.

Sime won 100m silver at the 1960 Olympics in a photo finish but injury and misfortune prevented him from winning more medals.

He was predicted to win at least one gold at the 1956 Melbourne Games but a groin injury ended his Olympic dream that year.

Sime also anchored the United States team to an apparent gold in the 4x100-meter relay in Rome but the team were disqualified for an errant baton pass.

He returned to Duke, completed his medical degree and settled in South Florida, where he became a renowned eye doctor with celebrity patients such as Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle and Richard Nixon.

In 1981, he was elected to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame and died in 2016 aged 79.

As well as Lisa, Sime's two other children had stellar athletic careers.

Sherrie was once the No. 1-ranked singles tennis player at the University of Virginia, while Scott lettered four seasons as a fullback at Duke.

Billy McCaffrey

Ed's brother Billy – who is Christian's uncle – was a star basketball player at Duke, helping the Blue Devils to the national title in 1991.

A role player, he scored an important 16 points off the bench against Kansas in the final.

But 16 days after that championship win, Billy transferred to Vanderbilt, a decision which shocked the college basketball landscape at the time.

It proved a successful move, with Billy becoming a two-time All American at Vanderbilt where he averaged 20.6 points per game in the 1992–93 and 1993–94 seasons.

Following his college career, he went on to play five seasons of professional basketball in Italy, Germany and Australia, winning a title in the NBL.

After retiring, he had coaching spells at  St. Bonaventure and Maine.

Ed and Billy's sister Monica played basketball at Georgetown.,

Max, Dylan and Luke McCaffrey

Christian's three brothers have all played college football at an elite level.

Max, who is the oldest sibling aged 29, played wide receiver at Duke from 2012-15, where he recorded 117 catches for 1,341 yards and 12 touchdowns for his career.

He bounced around numerous NFL practice teams, making his league debut with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2017.

In 2020, Max joined his dad Ed on on the University of Northern Colorado coaching staff, where he spent three seasons.

Earlier this year, he became an offensive assistant at the Miami Dolphins.

Dylan, a quarterback, struggled to make a mark at Michigan before transferring to Northern Colorado in 2021 to play for his dad.
