Iola Vivian Johnson, the first African-American news anchor for a Dallas television station, was born on October 10, 1950. Johnson was born in the Arkansas city of Texarkana. One of her first professional jobs was writing for the 10 o’clock news at NBC station KVOA in Tucson, Arizona. She joined WFAA in Dallas in 1973 and made her debut as a weekend news anchor in May of that year. She and Tracy Rowlett started a ten-year term as co-anchors in 197Their news programme was the most successful in Dallas-Fort Worth television history while they worked together. Johnson worked at WFAA-TV for over a decade. Johnson previously hosted “Positively Texas,” a weekly public affairs television show that aired on TXA 21 KTXA, CBS 11’s sister station and a former UPN affiliate.
Johnson resigned her job as a news anchor at WFAA-TV in 1985 to start her own company. (March 2, 1985 was her last night on WFAA-TV.) She returned to Dallas after a brief stint in St. Louis, where she worked as a reporter for KKDA’s morning show. Johnson returned to television news in September 2000, co-hosting a new hour-long broadcast on KTVT CBS 11 in Dallas-Fort Worth with old friend and former WFAA colleague Tracy Rowlett. Tracy and Iola left the 4 p.m. newscast after it was cancelled after two years.
