Several residents in Canton, Massachusetts think Read is innocent, believing that a cover-up is hiding the person who actually killed O’Keefe.

Protests have sprung up all over downtown, including at the Select Board’s last six meetings.

Earlier this week, a group of protestors showed up with tape over their mouths with sighs that read, “Silenced” and “We need to be heard.”

Some people shouted, “Shame on you!” as Canton Select Chair Thomas Theodore tried to tell the mob that the board was interested in what they had to say.

Other residents said the protests have consumed the entire community.

Several people have placed signs in front of their homes to express their support for either Read or O’Keefe.

“Free Karen Read!” read one sign.

“You can't even go out to eat at a local restaurant without having folks walk in, you know, saying, 'Oh, John. Oh, Karen. Oh, Kelly.' I mean, you're just hearing stuff everywhere you go,” Alex Weingart told a local NBC affiliate.

Weingart said the case has “caused a lear divide in town.”

“I think that we really need to come together,” he said.”

Mary Harnum, another resident, said she feels horrible for the families involved.

“I just pray and we all pray that the truth will come out and we just have to let the justice system do their job,” she said.

“Let’s all take a step back and take a deep breath. We all care about this community.”

Prosecutors claimed Read allegedly ran O’Keefe over with her SUV on January 29, 2022 after dropping him off at a home party.

However, her attorneys say it’s a cover-up and that the people who were at the party were the ones that killed O’Keefe.

The trial is scheduled to begin in March - in the meantime, speculation behind O'Keefe's death has run rampant.
