Super Mario Kart launched on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System on August 27, 1992 in Japan – and September 1 that same year in the US.

The smash-hit kart-racing game sold millions of copies globally, and was re-released several times.

If you've stashed a copy away then it's worth just under $100 – as long as you have the game, box, and manual.

But the value can rise far higher than that, according to PriceCharting.com.

If you have a sealed copy of the game then it's worth as much as $499.99.

And if you've had that copy professionally graded – and it's of a very high standard – then your sale could be worth $6,815.

Sadly if you've only got the loose cartridge then the value drops significantly to just $35.

The box itself is more valuable with a listed worth of $61.50.

MARIO MADNESS

Super Mario Kart landed in late 1992 and lets players race around tracks in karts as one of eight characters.

They included: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, Donkey Kong Jr., Toad, and Koopa Troopa.

It was the first entry into the Mario Kart franchise, which has since spawned an entire series of games.

Players would race around tracks inspired by Mario game locations, and use power-ups (like slippery bananas or flying shells) to hinder their opponents.

The game was particularly favored for its multiplayer mode that let two gamers face off in person.

It landed to critical acclaim and holds a 94% score on GameRankings.

One reviewer from Thunderbolt called it the "most addictive" title on SENS.

The game was the fourth-best-selling title for SNES, selling over 8.76 million copies globally.
