Because LAPD psychologists believed that women’s voices would have a more soothing and relaxing impact over the airwaves, women were preferentially sought as police radio dispatchers. The concept was that if a male cop was pinned down by gunfire and/or injured but was still within radio contact, hearing the female dispatcher’s tone would deter the officer from panicking until backup came. Her spouse worked as a motorcycle cop for the Los Angeles Police Department. She worked as a voice actor from the late 1960s through the late 1970s, mostly supplying police dispatch voice work for Adam-12 and a few other television series (i.e.,
Dragnet, Lou Grant and Columbo). With the exception of one or two episodes, her voice work as a police dispatcher (“1-Adam-12, 1-Adam-12, see the guy…”) was included in every episode of that series. She also made a cameo as a police clerk in the fifth season episode “Suspended,” in which Officer Pete Malloy asks her for a favour (Martin Milner). However, don’t expect to see Claridge’s face in the episode because it appears that certain steps were taken to ensure that she wouldn’t be recognised, such as the camera angles used in the sequence: when Milner first walks into the room, the camera is across the room, and only Shaaron’s left profile can be seen at a distance. The camera is positioned above Shaaron’s head, over her left shoulder, and angled down and diagonally for the close-up, making it difficult for the spectator to make out much of her facial characteristics. This was most likely done to safeguard Shaaron since she is a genuine LAPD dispatcher, not just a voice actor.
